Colitis

What is Colitis?
Common symptoms of ulcerative colitis include rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. It is inflammation of the inner lining of the large bowl. If not controlled it will develop into a chronic inflammatory condition.

The colon is the large bowel (see picture below) where waste material is stored. The rectum is the end of the colon adjacent to the anus.

Ulcerative colitis is closely related to another condition of inflammation of the intestines called Crohn's disease. Together, they are frequently referred to as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's diseases are chronic conditions that can last years, even decades.

What is the Chiropractic Approach?
Lower back joint restrictions can have an effect upon internal organs. These can include the bowels, sex organs( i.e. ovaries, uterus, prostrate, testes) and bladder. All of these organs can be effected. Subluxations (joint displacements) of the Lower back and pelvic regions often result in poor pelvic organ function. Within the medical field this spinal approach is totally ignored. Chiropractors frequently see gratifying results with these problems in their patients.

From Research Files
The resolution of chronic colitis with chiropractic care leading to increased fertility (1). A 32-year-old female presented at my office for chiropractic care of her chronic colitis and did not disclose her condition of infertility during the course of care at this office. There appears to be some relationship between chiropractic care and relief of some visceral (internal organs) conditions relating to the colon and female reproductive organs. Chiropractic care including Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT)- a regular chiropractic technique.
The patient had her chronic condition of colitis relieved and simultaneously became pregnant after giving up on allopathic fertility treatments for 7 years.

Irritable bowel syndrome and spinal manipulation: a case report. (2)
Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as mucous colitis and nervous bowel affects 15-25% of adults. Symptoms include cramping and/or abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation, ulcer-type symptoms, heartburn and/or upper abdominal indigestion. In this case study of a 25-year-old woman with chronic irritable bowel syndrome her chief complaint was intestinal pain and diarrhoea which was worse during stressful periods which occurred one or two times per week for the past five years. After her first chiropractic adjustment, she reported that she had not experienced any diarrhoea for two days. Her other symptoms were quickly alleviated. Two years later she remained symptom free.
