Vertigo

What causes Vertigo?
There are different causes for vertigo. Chiropractic care is very effective for some of these causes. Some sufferers of this condition do need medical attention. This health issue is so debilitating that initially it quickly sends patients back to the doctors for relief. By the time patients look for chiropractic help usually their medical practitioners have eliminated most of the more serious causes, i.e. ear infections, blood pressure,(hypertension) Meniere disease etc and they are usually on some prescription drug but still suffering with some vertigo. These patients usually do not know where to go next. In these cases chiropractic care is of great help.

How do Chiropractors help.
Vertigo can be caused by decreased blood flow to the brain and base of the brain.

Blood vessels seen as the red wire which travels up through the side of the neck (see the first picture on the left) and then loops backwards coming through the base of the scull (second picture). Neck tension or injury crimps these blood vessels reducing blood to the head. Vertigo is the result.

The Chiropractic Approach
Because Chiropractors regularly care for the neck region with spinal adjustments, it has become a safe and effective method for assisting with these problems.

Vertigo will often develop with migraine headaches. Vertigo will usually precede the headache. There is often a prior history of similar episodes but no lasting problems.
Meniere disease is composed of a triad of symptoms: episodes of vertigo, ringing in the ears, and hearing loss. People have the abrupt onset of severe vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, as well as periods in which they are symptom-free.

From Research Files.
Vertigo 60 chronic vertigo patients – a study.
Sixty Patients With Chronic Vertigo Undergoing Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care to Correct Vertebral Subluxation: A Retrospective Analysis Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. November 8 2006 pp 1-9 Written by Erin L. Elster, D.C

Sixty chronic vertigo patients where examined. The research study examined neck and head traumas as a causative factor in vertigo. The patient sample group was examined over an 8 year period. Fifty six patients recalled a head trauma prior to the onset of their vertigo. Motor vehicle accidents (MVA) accounted for 25 of this group. Sporting injuries - 16 patients, falling on sidewalks and down stairs – 6 patients.

Upper cervical (neck) subluxation were found in all 60 patients. All patients responded to care within one to six months. Forty eight patients where symptom free following adjustments, and twelve patients showed improvement in either severity or frequency of their attacks.

Vertigo
"My name is Angelia twice this year I have been stricken with Vertigo caused by a middle ear infection. This is a very debilitating condition which leaves a person extremely dizzy, nauseas and unable to stand or continue with the simplest daily activity. In my case my already partially deaf ear becomes a garbled noise infuser which makes the spoken voice sound like a transformer robot; a muffled one at that. I also found my vision slightly blurry and I was unable to read the print in a telephone book.

My mum recommended her chiropractor. My condition had caused me great stress and often I was bedridden. Mum's Chiropractor suggested I read his website and then decide if I wanted to see him or someone else, however he felt he could help me. Absolutely no pressure was put on me. I was living on anti nausea tablets and Panadol. At this point I would try anything. I made an appointment. I had my first treatment and found the information provided filled in the gaps and added some new ideas. I said to mum who came with me, "I need coffee," we walked slowly to the coffee shop and ordered. The girl asked me a question and I stood there dumbfounded, mum had to answer. We got our coffee and went to sit down. Mum asked if I was OK and I said shocked, "I could hear what she said" that was the first time in a month I heard someone from a short distance clearly. I was stunned. Over the next week and after a second treatment my vision became less blurry and I can again read the print in the telephone book and I have not taken an anti nausea tablet since first beginning treatment. I'm amazed at the benefits from this treatment and I would recommend to anyone to check out or talk to a chiropractor to see what is available. Who knows, it may help you too."
