General Health

How to improve your health?
Many factors make for a healthy life. A balanced diet, exercise, managing stress, these are some of the basics.
Furthermore, minimizing the negatives which are, alcohol, cigarettes, overwork, long shifts, incorrect posture at workstations all of these are stressors to the human body.

Another factor is getting control of our health issues. Illness such as asthma, diabetes, cardiac and immune problems are areas that must be managed for us to live healthy lives.

From the "Chiropractic" approach let us see how we contribute to better health.

What is the Chiropractic Approach?
For most people the link between general health and well being and the important part the spinal nerves play is rarely considered. Think for a moment how your life could change if you severed your spinal cord in a motor vehicle accident……
From the brain the spinal cord becomes a highway to the rest of the body. Down this passage way great nerve trunks flow. Millions of nerves trailing out like threads of cotton, feeding every organ of the body. For example: the liver, spleen, heart, and kidneys. Day and night these nerves transmit vital information back and forth to the brain. Traveling at a 1000+ impulses a second! How important then are our spinal nerves.

The Chiropractic Approach is to treat the vertebra of the spine always with the nervous system in mind.
The purpose of chiropractic is to reduce vertebral "subluxations"
(reducing back restrictions or jamming) and assisting these spinal nerves as they manage and organize the body.

What the Research studies say

A retrospective assessment of network care using a survey of self-rated health, wellness and quality of life. Blanks, RHI, Schuster, TL. J Vertebral Subluxation Research Vol. 1 No. 4, 1997.

This was a study done collecting data from 76 chiropractors with 2156 patients, gathered from offices throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Australia. It involved 1363 patients in a study group and 793 patients in the control group.

"Results are very encouraging and demonstrate that patients under care experience an improvement of 16% in physical health, 16% in mental/emotional health, 29% in stress and 7% in life enjoyment."

With the group receiving chiropractic care there was a 17% improvement in SRQOL (Self reported quality of life) compared to the control group. The author suggested "a major impact of subluxation centered chiropractic care on the physical and emotional domains of health and even greater effects alleviating stress and improving overall QOL (quality of life).

Note: This was a large study; the patients did their own self assessments of their conditions. Patients have reported over many studies how chiropractic has improved their health.
What other studies have shown is the 20% improvement, if maintained, health momentum begins to build. Twelve month later they will often report improvement of 70-80% in their overall health.

Another interesting study
Sharpless SK: "Susceptibility of spinal roots to compression block." The Research Status of Spinal Manipulative Therapy. NINCDS monograph 15, DHEW publication (NIH) 76-998:155,1975

Dr. Seth Sharpless a researcher at the University of Colorado demonstrated that as little as the weight of a 50 cent piece on a nerve as it exits the spine… has the potential to decrease that nerve impulse by as much as 60%.

Note: Try to imagine how unhealthy your body would be with some organs, tissues or glands functioning at only 40%!

Is it any wonder that we lose our strength and health if this is occurring in our bodies?

Testimonial
My name is Colin, I am 50 years of age. I enjoy surfing and playing golf. I play golf regularly off a 6 handicap.
Without regular chiropractic check ups I am sure my body would not let me enjoy, or pursue, these activities the way I do.
I have been treated with chiropractic adjustments for the last 15 years; it is that ongoing maintenance care that keeps me healthy and active in my sports.

How Chiropractic Helps?
The nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) controls all the systems of the body. It all exits out of the spinal column. It was with this understanding that the chiropractic approach to health developed. Today it is an established form of health care helping millions of patients. Staying healthy is not a thing of chance. Make chiropractic a part of your health regime. It will return to you great dividends. It will give you better health.
